PSYCHOTHERAPY
Many people seek help for depression, anxiety, symptoms of trauma and difficulty adjusting to life changes and stressors. We provide a safe, neutral setting that enables clients to explore complex and often very painful or distressing issues in a contained, constructive manner. We use a variety of therapeutic approaches (CBT, narrative, hypnotherapy/relaxation). After a comprehensive initial assessment, we will select the treatment method that is most helpful for the client depending upon the issues. We build on existing strengths, skills and resilience and provide the tools and resources needed to help clients move from feelings of helplessness to a sense of competency.
“Therapy is a necessary, at times profound, educational method that teaches us how to be more fully human and live an optimum life.” (Lynn Grodzki, Family Therapy Magazine, 2004)
COUPLES COUNSELLING
Emotionally fulfilling relationships are essential to our mental and physical health. Research has shown that supportive marriages and positive relationships reduce the negative impact of severe stress. Utilizing emotionally focused couples therapy we improve patterns of communicating and restore intimacy between partners. We help couples move from a “blaming stance” to learning how to identify and request their needs in the couple relationship. Strong emotions of anger and acts of distancing are explored in a safe, contained environment. The goal of therapy is to address unmet emotional needs underlying conflict and subsequently strengthen attachments and foster healthy relationships.
“… maybe emotional connection between people is like oxygen .. maybe isolation is actually dangerous for us. Attachment theory turns this mystery of love into an open book ...” (Dr. Sue Johnson)
SEX THERAPY
Sex matters. Unfortunately many therapists are not trained or comfortable dealing with sexuality. We have Intensive Sex Therapy Training and participated in the University of Guelph’s sexuality conferences. We work with couples experiencing sexual difficulties such as loss of intimacy and passion, differences in levels of sexual desire, orgasm issues, erectile dysfunctions and sexual compulsive behaviours. Sex therapy involves taking a thorough sexual history, referring to medical practitioners when needed, teaching about sexuality and relationships, addressing relationship issues, identifying and changing patterns of sexual behaviour and providing take home assignments. Our work tends to be goal focused and short term (approximately 10-12 sessions). Many clients report an increase in the frequency of sex and more intimate, satisfying relations after couples and sex therapy.
“Unsolvable conflicts and sexual difficulties are midpoints in a healthy relationship, rather than signs of personal inadequacy, incompatibility, or falling out of love.” (Dr. David Schnarch)
FAMILY THERAPY
Having a child can be the most wonderful experience, however, parenting is often challenging and at times can be overwhelming without appropriate support. Our strong background in child and adolescent development supports our clinical work with families. We help families navigate through life stages including adjustment to separation/divorce and blended family arrangements.
Developing a strong bond with a parent is the most important factor in child development and all later learning. The World Health Organization found that positive, close relationships immunize children against stress throughout their lives (Carl Hanore, Under Pressure, 2008). Young people who report having close, affectionate and understanding parents have fewer symptoms of depression (Statistics Canada, 2005). Although we may have sessions with your child or adolescent individually, our work is always focused on fostering healthy, strong bonds between family members.
It is important to take action and seek help for your child or adolescent if you have concerns about his/her mental health as suicide is the second leading cause of death for late teens and young adults (Statistics Canada, 2008). Visit your family doctor or get immediate support from your local hospital in emergency situations. It is often difficult to get troubled youths to go for help. We have found that they are sometimes more open to seeing a private therapist. We can provide an assessment, individual and family counselling, and when needed help you get connected with community resources and medical support.
“If you don’t like something change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.” (Maya Angelou)
