Introduction

Sylvia Rukkila is a registered marriage and family therapist in private practice, who works with couples and individuals experiencing difficulties in day-to-day living, and in their relationships. Another part of her work includes counselling and supporting those living with cancer.
Sylvia receives clients in the old village of Markham (Hwy 7 & 48) where she is associated with Dr. Cheryl Noble, registered clinical psychologist. New clients, as well as physician and clergy-based referrals are warmly welcomed. To better serve families and those who work, appointments include late afternoon and evening hours on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Types of counselling available:
Counselling, or psychotherapy, is a service which involves talking to a trained professional to relieve and manage distress about any concern. It may involve a more detailed look at life issues in order to explore meaning. You may not always know what exactly you need to talk about, but counselling can help you to clarify your needs. The issue could be immediate (short-term counselling), but when your need is deeper, longer-term counselling is needed. RMFT research shows that couple and family therapy is an effective treatment for depression, severe mental illness, substance abuse, couple problems and parenting concerns, supporting client strengths, and inviting change.

Counselling sessions can take the form of individual counselling: confidential, one-on-one; couple counselling: partners talking with a counsellor together; family counselling: the entire family talks with the counsellor; or group counselling where individuals with similar concerns meet together with a trained counsellor to explore life issues in detail and the counsellor leads the members/provides guidance. A support group is formed of individuals who focus on one topic and is a way to connect with and learn from others with similar challenges. It may be facilitated by a trained professional, or be lead and organized by its members.

Fees for service:
Fees for service are paid by cheque or cash at the end of each session. Clients may receive insurance reimbursement for psychological services, as well as coverage under their EAP work benefits, or church sponsored CAP/Congregational Assistance Program or Benevolence Fund. The number of sessions may be determined by insurance package and ranges from 3-10. A reduced fee for those with limited financial resources may be offered. Please ask for details.

How can Counselling help you?

As a uniquely qualified relationship specialist, Sylvia has experience with a wide range of issues, including: couple /family conflict, abuse, communication and conflict resolution, depression, workplace anxiety, bereavement and grief, life transitions/changing roles, aging, spirituality and faith issues, cancer distress.
