Credentials
As a marriage and family therapist, Sylvia Rukkila
- has a Master of Divinity (M.Div) degree with a focus on marriage and family therapy. She has fulfilled professional competency requirements including rigorous post-graduate level studies and over 1000 hours of therapy under approved AAMFT clinical supervision
- is insured for public liability and personal indemnity, and actively pursues ongoing professional and personal development
- is a clinical member of the AAMFT ( American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists), the OAMFT (Ontario Association of Marriage and Family Therapists), the IFTA (International Family Therapy Association), CAPO (Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology) and a member of the Registry of Marriage and Family Therapists in Canada.
- adheres to her professional associations' code of ethics, code of conduct, and complaints procedure
- served on the OAMFT board of directors for 2 years(2008-2009) as student/associate member representative
Until her move to her current location in September, 2010, Sylvia
- was in private practice at Meadowbrook Counselling Associates, Markham
- served as volunteer professional counsellor at Tyndale Counselling Services, Tyndale University/College and Seminary, Toronto
- is a trained Wellspring leader for their Return to Work After Cancer program
- has extensive experience in the healthcare field including radiation therapy training (Princess Margaret Hospital). She is herself, a cancer survivor.
Sylvia is an experienced group facilitator, motivational speaker, and published journalist/editor. Her personal perspective on marriage and family dynamics spans over 35 years and four generations. In her spare time, Sylvia volunteers for Caring Hands Kampala (Uganda), and coordinates the annual Saalem Church Bazaar. She enjoys music with her cellist husband and relaxing with their 6 grandchildren at their Prince Edward County cottage.
