Sylvia uses an integrated model of therapy based in family systems to address each unique client situation, choosing interventions that are most helpful and productive in opening up new perspectives and client-created solutions. Clients learn cognitive and problem solving skills so that they can reframe old attitudes, deal with fears effectively, and defuse potentially “hot” situations. Questions regarding therapeutic approach and method are welcomed as client and therapist work together towards mutually agreed upon goals.
Couples preparing for marriage, newly blended families, and couples who are now empty-nesters benefit from the popular five- session Prepare-Enrich program that Sylvia offers as a package. Together, couples explore the differences in their families of origin, their emotional and behavioural patterns, and practice new and effective communication and conflict resolution skills. They also discover the art of goal and dream making together. Couple relationship strengths are identified and growth areas defined through an inventory. Life transitions into “unknown territory” become gateways into the safe and familiar. Gift certificates for engagements, weddings and anniversaries are available. Every effort will be made to accommodate special dates.
Sylvia has specialized in counselling those living with cancer. Into the therapy session, she brings many years of experience in health care, including work in radiation therapy, and is herself, a cancer survivor. This has given her a unique perspective on the emotional needs and stresses affecting those who are in crisis due to loss of health. Caregivers, including healthcare professionals, often face emotional burnout and caregiver fatigue. Finding solutions and positive ways to respond to the cancer challenge through counselling, provides hope and healing.
