CHOOSING TO GO FOR THERAPY
Asking for therapy is so hard for most of us that, unless we have a therapist who we already know and trust, we either delay until we are desperate or we avoid it altogether. When we look for a good therapist we are at a very vulnerable point in our lives. This is a time when we are needing more than our own resources to move from a painful and unhappy situation. We may have lost trust in our own judgment and abilities, or may feel powerless to change destructive patterns or relationships in our life.
We need a professional who is not only highly skilled in understanding emotional functioning and relationship dynamics, but who is also able to hear and understand our particular situation: who we are as people, our way of seeing the world, what we value, and what are our personal resources and limitations. We need someone who is able to see the strength within us and who can boost us to get through the blocks we have been encountering. A good therapist will add perspective to what we can see from our vantage point, imparting knowledge about human relations and human functioning, and providing further resources that can help. Sometimes a good therapist can help us to understand ourselves and our situations more by utilizing exercises, techniques and experiences that impart deeper insight.
Bev makes use of a wide range of skills and techniques to personally design the therapy to the client. She encourages an ongoing feedback process to ensure that the therapy is fitting with the clients’ comfort, expectations, and needs. We all require a safe oasis in which we can step out of our lives and explore what is happening for us in order to go the next step. The therapy experience is designed to be that safe oasis.
